A fully installed version of Oracle VirtualBox. This tutorial uses VirtualBox Version 5.2.6 (for Windows hosts) with the VirtualBox 5.2.6 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack installed (both can be downloaded from here). A copy of Windows 95 (and it’s Licence Key). This can either be an original CD or an ISO image.

This is my first time working with Virtual Box. I am trying to set up a Windows 95 virtual system. I have a motherboard with SATA connections and one 40 pin IDE being used for the CD RW and the DVD ROM. There is no 34 pin IDE available for a floopy drive.

I created a Windows 95 boot disk.iso and burned it to a CD. I can boot to the CD within VirtualBox. Normally the next step would be to insert the Windows 95 CD and in the DOS window type the drive letter of the CD followed by win95 setup. I cannot figure out how to get VirtualBox to recognize the Windows 95 CD.

Curiously, it is assigning A: to the boot CD I created. I have checked to be sure that the CD is mounted and it is using the correct drive letter in the details of the guest machine.

I'm not sure though about the Hard Disk settings since I do not have an IDE hard drive, but a SATA hard drive. How shall I proceed?

First windows 95 bootcd boots into a virtual diskette that is on the cd that is why its a: Second to get any further you had to have cd-drivers on that diskette which I don't think windows95 included. But try to see if you can reach the cd by doing c: d: e: Or read the last lines of text on the screen after booting it might be something that tells a drive letter for the cd. And sata or ide in the physical systems doesn't matter. In virtualbox you select how it should look to the guest and as w95 didn't have any sata driver that is ruled out. So try with the lowest numbered ide type.

Here's what I get when I start the Windows 95 guest machine. I entered win95 setup and as it tried to install it gave me the message 'Please wait while Setup initializes. Cannot create a temporary directory. If you have HPFS or NTFS installed on your hard drive, you will need to create an MS-DOS partition to set up Windows.'

First of all, read this tutorial on how to setup up Windows 9x/Me guests under VirtualBox: Secondly, the retail and OEM versions of Windows 95 CDs are not bootable. In order to setup Windows 95, you have to create a bootable Windows 95 diskette image and setup the hard disk image using FDISK*. For Windows 95 starters or testers under VirtualBox, I recommend that a 504 MB VHD hard disk image be created (if you have Virtual PC 2007 installed), allocate only 16 MB of system memory and only 2 MB of video memory and install the original retail version of Windows 95 (4.00.950) as OEM versions of the OS take up more disk space.
